ON THE HIGH SEAS, written to inspire young people to seek their dreams, but only after they have adequately prepared themselves for the task. I felt the need to express these three short stories for kids of all ages, but primarily for readers in the 10 to 14 year age group.
In the first story of the trilogy illustrates that careful planning and training help, and is critical to the successful accomplishment of one's goals. Here a young boy accepts his father's challenge to rebuild an old boat, first to learn one of life's lessons by taking on the monumental task of rebuilding the boat, then employ the knowledge of seamanship instilled in him by his father and his father's boating associates to make a solo 3 day trip down Georgia's Intracoastal Waterway.
The next tale illustrates the even though the participants were well trained and physically fit, the lack of preparation brought them into closes proximity with calamity. Three young men challenge the summer flood waters of Georgia's Altamaha River. Three of them start the voyage, but only two complete the trip. Whatever happened to 'Pete"? ...... help the remaining two fight the river on their way to the Atlantic.
In the final episode, two young men embrace haphazard and "devil may care" attitudes which without their prior experience and training could have had much more serious consequences. What started out as a nice winter's day sailing turns into an almost catastrophic, freezing experience.
This small book in its own right inspires, encourages and demonstrates by true life experiences that preparation, training and caution/respect are the better part of valor. A life so lived will not diminish the spirit of adventure and will continue to impart important lessons that will lead to a well-rounded and fulfilling life.
A Great Book for Teens, Pre-teens or anyone who thinks --YOUNG. This book contains many illustrations, maps, drawings and a glossary of terms used in this book
NOTE ON THE COVER ART: When I was getting ready to publish this book, I was still searching for a name. Back in 1983 the renown watercolorist Danny Alexander gave me the painting and I had always called it " The Boy in the Boat", and it has hung in my home ever since, I called my old friend Danny and asked if he would mind if I used the painting on the cover, he said that he would like for me to use it and told me that it was mine and I could use it if I wanted to, and told me that the name of painting was "On the High Seas" so hence the name of the book. Shortly after Danny created the painting it was damaged in shipping to a prospective buyer, it was returned to him with a large gash across the boy's face. Danny being the great artist that he is repaired the painting, the damage is undetectable, it was a gift to wife my Meg and me for our marriage in 1983.
